Appreciation, Balance and Service

Photo of Sakyong Mipham RinpocheAPPROACHING THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF OUR ARRIVAL AT SHAMBHALA MOUNTAIN CENTER, WE LOOK BACK AT THE LAST YEAR WITH APPRECIATION AND JOY FOR THE EXPERIENCES WE'VE SHARED.

We are particularly grateful to be working with such a committed and generous staff. Through a number of new projects, including creating staff working groups focusing on our practice and culture and further systematizing our operations, we are developing a stronger balance between our life as a resident community and our responsibilities as a successful enterprise. This balance can be seen in our increased ability to welcome and support our extended community attending an ever-growing number of programs.

We were delighted to host the winter dathün retreat with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and President Reoch, who created an experience of Shambhala society that reached far beyond the program container to permeate the staff culture and beyond. Much of our staff was able to attend talks or hear them broadcast live due to our new on-site radio station. The staff was also addressed directly and enjoyed a private Ruling Your World book signing with Rinpoche, during which he emphasized the virtues of practice and service. “We must be clear about why we are here,” he said, encouraging us to hold to the view that we are being of service to a world that greatly needs what the Center has to offer.

As we hold to this view of service, we are also very thankful to those of you who have staffed our programs and volunteered at the Center this year, making it possible for us to offer more than ever to our participants. We invite you to staff one of our many upcoming programs again. Lastly, we would like to personally thank the many of you who have offered us support in our transition to Shambhala Mountain. We look forward to another magical year and to hearing from you as our work here continues.

Allan & Doria Cross

Allan and Doria relocated to Shambhala Mountain Center with their now ten-year-old son, Jacob, in June 2005 from San Antonio, Texas. Allan was empowered as executive director by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche in a public ceremony in August 2005, during which Doria was also named Protectress of the Mother Lineage to reflect her role as holder of the land’s feminine principle. For more information on the Crosses and their roles at the Center, see the Community Life page.
