Art & Daily Life at Shambhala Mountain Center

"These poems were written during the first weeks of Vajradhatu Seminary in June of 2000. I was living in a tent, still getting to know people, my tent-mate wouldn't be there for another month and I had the tent to myself.

I woke up one morning and realized it had snowed during the night. It was stunningly beautiful. During the morning meditation in the main assembly tent, everyone was bundled up in their coats, scarves, blankets and hats. I found it truly inspiring."

6/11:
laughter in the distance

laughter in the distance
tears on my cheek
a half-smile on my face

the moon's silver glow
casts light on me
from its tree-top crescent

when will I see your mischievous smile?
why do I remember you laughing,
hiding behind trees,
playing jokes on friends?

the air is cold and I'm wearing a hat;
why do I want to sleep on the rocks?
6/17:
I heard the rain last night

I heard the rain last night,
whispering to me while I slept,
"come out, my friend,
I am waiting for you."

when I awoke
snow was on the ground
and the trees had all turned white.
drops of joy fell from my eyes.
6/20:
we have shed so many tears

we have shed so many tears,
tears for lost love,
tears for the deceased,
tears to mark the passing of time.

let us come together,
drink this salty brew,
until we are so drunk
the scales fall from our eyes,
and we fall together laughing
like a wino who found a jewel
sewn into his jacket.
