After decades of Soviet oppression, the plains of Mongolia have once again become a center of practice for Tibetan Buddhism as this nomadic nation rediscovers its ancient spiritual heritage. We will explore this heritage at one of the country’s most magnificent monasteries, Erdenezu, built from the ruins of the great city of Karakorum. Following two nights in a traditional yurt in the vast steppes of the Gobi Desert, where we will learn more about the life of Mongolia’s hundreds of thousands of nomads, we willl continue on across Hustai National Park to the legendary, sprawling Shangri-La known as Armabayasgalant Monastery. After winding through the lush green Selenge River valley, we will conclude our journey at Ulan Bataar, site of the Ganden Monastery. This complex is home to the magnificent statue of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion. Under its watchful eyes, the Buddha’s teachings are once again blossoming throughout this breathtaking country.
