HOLISTIC CANCER RETREAT FOR WOMEN: Led by Dr. Victoria Maizes, Tulku Thondup Rinpoche,

Press Release - July 19, 2007

Red Feather Lakes, CO — Cancer can be debilitating — or it can be a vehicle for profound spiritual healing and awakening. The second annual "Courageous Women, Fearless Living: A Retreat for Women Touched by Cancer" — to be held August 21 to 26, 2007 — approaches the disease in an unconventional, truly holistic way, addressing the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the cancer journey with a team of experts in a mountain retreat setting.

The retreat draws on the latest insights in integrative medicine, the ancient wisdom of Buddhist teachings and yoga, and the healing potential of dance, art, and music. It teaches participants practical methods of healing to take home with them. This approach proved successful at the inaugural retreat last summer, which drew 85 women from all over the U.S., Mexico, and Chile.

The team of expert teachers this year includes Dr. Victoria Maizes, executive director of Dr. Andrew Weil's Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Arizona; esteemed Tibetan meditation master and Boundless Healing author Tulku Thondup Rinpoche; contemplative hospice pioneer and author Acharya Judith Lief; Alternative Medicine editor-in-chief Linda Sparrowe; and yoga and sacred movement instructor Sofia Diaz.

"Courageous Women, Fearless Living" is presented by the Shambhala Mountain Center in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Founded in 1971, it is widely regarded as one of the preeminent spiritual retreat centers in the West. It is home to the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya, one of the most noteworthy examples of Buddhist sacred architecture in the world and the largest monument dedicated to peace in North America.

Program Highlights
Dr. Victoria Maizes, who has worked with hundreds of cancer patients over the years, offers her rich experience and practical knowledge on the latest in integrative care. She'll give five workshops on integrative approaches to cancer, including nutrition, supplements, mind-body connection, and spirituality, as well as strategies for dealing with side effects of treatment such as fatigue, hot flashes, and peripheral neuropathy.

Tulku Thondup will share healing visualizations and meditation practices, powerful and transformative techniques to awaken healing energies in body and mind. While based in the wisdom tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, the practices are designed to be accessible to those of all faiths or traditions or lack thereof.

Providing instruction in mindfulness meditation practice, Shambhala senior teacher Judith Lief will show participants how to meet and hold all of one's experience — moment-by-moment and breath-by-breath. Drawing on more than thirty years of experience in meditation and hospice work, she will demystify meditation and introduce the healing power of presence.

In her commitment to women’s health and well-being, yoga instructor Linda Sparrowe will lead gentle, transformative yoga sessions throughout the retreat. She will show participants how to relate to themselves on and off the mat with kindness, spaciousness, and grace.

Celebrating and appreciating the feminine spirit, Sofia Diaz, a long-time student of sacred movement, will offer South Indian temple dancing performances and will lead participants in fully expressing their feminine beauty and power.
