All Levels Kyudo Retreat: The Way of the Bow with Kanjuro Shibata XX, SenseiJune 2 – 6, 2009
Traditionally regarded as the highest form of samurai training, kyudo (Japanese archery) has evolved over the centuries into a powerful path of meditation. Although the essence is similar, it has a slightly different feeling from other forms of meditation. To focus on hitting the target or having a beautiful form is merely something ego enjoys. Practicing Kyudo clears our heart and teaches us to be steady, straightforward, and move ahead undistracted by the desires of ego.
As a meditation environment, Shambhala Mountain Center is a natural place for kyudo practice. Adults and children age 8 or above are welcome. Equipment will be provided as part of the program. Kanjuro Shibata XX, Sensei, is a 20th-generation Kyudo master and 3rd-generation bowmaker to the Emperor of Japan. He was invited to the West in 1980 by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Together they founded kyudojos (practice halls) in North America and Europe under the auspices of Zenko International. Having trained in Kyudo since childhood, Shibata Sensei, now in his eighties, is the preeminent teacher in the Way of the Bow.
