Enjoy the Brush with Kazuaki TanahashiAugust 14 – 16, 2009
Calligraphy is a 1,700-year-old art form and contemplative practice of East Asia. Enter this wisdom tradition by studying ancient Chinese masterpieces and learning the basic techniques and aesthetics of brushwork. We will begin by copying selected ideographs before improvising freely with a variety of paper and brushes. Explore how this ancient creative practice can awaken your essential nature of serenity, presence and beauty, while bringing to awareness the inner obstacles to enjoyment and creative expression. No previous experience is necessary. Brushes and supplies will be provided by the instructor.
Kazuaki Tanahashi, born and trained in Japan, is an artist, writer and peace worker. Creator of a genre of one-stroke paintings and multi-color Zen circles, he has exhibited his brushwork, performed and taught worldwide. As a calligrapher in East Asian style, he creates works of large single ideographs. Author of Brush Mind, Penetrating Laughter and Lotus, Kaz is the founder of A World Without Armies, an initiative for global demilitarization.
