Denver Botanic Gardens Overnight in the Gardens of Shambhala with Jim Tolstrup and Panayoti Kelaidis
|
September 23 - 24, 2006 Join Jim Tolstrup, Horticulture Director at Shambhala Mountain Center and Panayoti Kelaidis, Denver Botanic Gardens' Director of Outreach for tours of Shambhala Botanic Gardens newly expanded Native Plants Garden and Oriental Healing Plants Garden. Begin your visit by a tour with Jim Tolstrup followed by lunch. Visit the Great Stupa, the most elaborate of its kind in the US and hike through the restored trails. In the afternoon you are free to explore the gardens, trails and grounds on your own. In the evening join Panayoti Kelaidis for twilight chat on the special botanical features of the Red Feather Lakes area. Leave Sunday morning to reconvene at Fort Collins Nursery, which specializes in woody plants, especially Western Natives and unusual woodies from Eurasia. This nursery has been the force behind the introduction of most woody plants in Plant Select ("Cytisus purgans, Lonicera korolkowii" 'Blue Velvet' and the spectacular "Acer tataricum" 'Hot Wings'). Staff from the nursery will show us behind the scenes and in the growing fields, which are full of wonderful specimens you will want to keep in mind for your own garden. This trip will meet at the parking lot in Red Feather Lakes, approximately 30 minutes north of Fort Collins. Directions will be sent upon registration. Fee: $145 for Denver Botanic Garden members, $175 for nonmember, double occupancy, includes all meals. For single occupancy please add $20
