The Epic Ramayana Revealed Through Story & Yoga with Douglas Brooks & Jeanie ManchesterJune 4 – 7, 2009
The great epic Ramayana remains the most important and frequently rehearsed of all the tales of ancient India. With heroes and heroines, demons and enchanted beings, Ramayana represents a bygone age of incomparable Dharma and an opportunity to witness and contemplate the empowering teachings of loving devotion. But in the visionary teachings of the Tantra, Ramayana's many characters appear as facets of the jewel of human experience, a reflection of the powers of Consciousness to appear in the prism of our own awareness: we are every character in the story and each has a role to play in the deepening contemplation of the infinite Self. In this retreat, we will tell our own Ramayana, become these characters, meditate, and reflect on the myriad meanings and possibilities of this great epic and its enduring power to change lives.
Douglas Brooks, PhD, is among the world’s leading scholars of Hindu Tantrism and the esoteric traditions of the Goddess. He holds a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School and a masters and doctorate from Harvard University’s Center for the Study of World Religions. Douglas has held academic positions both in India and the United States and has lectured around the world. Currently, he is Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester in New York. Jeanie Manchester, a certified Anusara teacher, has studied closely with master teachers John Friend, Dr. Douglas Brooks, and Richard Freeman. Her classes blend the precision of the universal principles of alignment with story and myth as a means to take us deeper into the mystery of the yogic process.
