Summer Dathün Meditation Retreat with Acharyas Gaylon Ferguson & Arawana Hayashi

July 14 – August 13, 2006

Deepen your connection to your practice and open your heart in this month-long meditation intensive.
&productsWarriorship in the Age of Materialism: Meditation & the Path of Awakening

Deepen your connection to your practice and open your heart. Intense practice provides a profoundly fresh view of one’s life—so precious in this hectic world. Designed for both the newcomer and the experienced student, this retreat can be done as a whole or in weekly segments.

Join Acharyas Gaylon Ferguson and Arawana Hayashi for a month-long intensive meditation retreat in which we will explore the true meaning of warriorship in today’s world.

A form developed by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the dathün is a rich practice opportunity that includes regular talks, meditation instruction and practice, interviews with skilled instructors and discussion. During this dathün, we will draw from the wisdom of both the Shambhala and Buddhist traditions, and will explore specific teachings on warriorship by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

Throughout the program, Acharya Hayashi will offer instruction in movement exercises that help to synchronize body, speech and mind; cultivate warriorship; awaken perception; and develop our awareness of our connections with each other. Acharya Ferguson will lead us in the study and contemplation of the oral traditions of the Shambhala lineage, offering a unique study environment to deepen our understanding of the teachings and path.

For a deep immersion into the path of meditation and warriorship, we invite you to attend the entire dathün. You can also participate in one of our weeklong segments, or weekthüns. Each week we will address a particular theme:

Week 1: The Body as the Ground of Practice
Week 2: Making Friends with Ourselves
Week 3: Working with Emotions
Week 4: Warrior in the World

In the Shambhala Buddhist tradition, dathün (Tibetan for "month session") is one of the most important training programs. There is a real power and depth in practicing with a group for a month, and for many people, it is a big step on their path of meditation.

We suggest reading Turning the Mind Into an Ally by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche prior to attending the program.

Acharya Gaylon Ferguson has led meditation retreats for 30 years, and he is currently a visiting professor at Naropa University. His article, Making Friends with Ourselves, was selected for inclusion in The Best Buddhist Writing 2005.

Arawana Hayashi is a dancer, choreographer and senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage. Chair of the Shambhala Arts Council and faculty member of the Shambhala Institute for Authentic Leadership, she also offers Presence workshops nationwide with Otto Scharmer, coauthor with Peter Senge of
Presence: An Exploration of Profound Change in People, Organizations and Society.
