The Yoga of Shambhala: Embodied Enlightenment with Dana Strong (July 29 – August 1)

In the time of the Buddha, yoga and meditation were considered inseparable practices on the path to enlightenment. Over time it seems the road has forked, and each practice has lost some of its potency without the other. Just as we train our bodies, we can train our minds. If the body feels blocked, the mind becomes anxious and heavy. Join us to discover the interconnection between yoga and meditation from the Shambhala perspective. This program will include a personal posture consultation, advice for establishing a home practice and specific yoga sequences that support a healthy meditation practice. Students at all levels of practice welcome.

Dana Strong, a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, has taught yoga in New York for 10 years under the guidance of Rodney Yee. She has cotaught OM yoga’s teaching-training program and recently led yoga at Shambhala Mountain’s Winter Dathün. She also teaches yoga at Riker's Island prison. Her teaching style combines the fluidity of breath with the precision of alignment in order to open the body and ease the mind.

Enlightened World: The Three Yanas of Shambhala Buddhadharma with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche (August 1 – 5)

The essence of the Shambhala tradition is developing the confidence to trust in sacred world and basic goodness. Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche will present the Shambhala Buddhist path, which combines the indestructible view of the Buddha with the unwavering confidence of Shambhala. The Sakyong will show how the mindfulness and awareness of the Hinayana path, the compassion of the Mahayana path and the wisdom of the Vajrayana path bring inner peace and freedom from aggression.

Understanding the Three Yanas is essential if we want to create an enlightened world. With the discipline of the Hinayana path, we begin to realize who we are, including our potential and our limitations, and we learn how to work with our disturbing emotions. By learning the basics of how to eat, walk, talk and sleep properly, our view expands and we start becoming decent human beings. From that we develop the Mahayana view of being less ego centered, and we cultivate a genuine appreciation of life and others. As we appreciate others more than ourselves, we see reality with clarity and precision. Through clear seeing, we discover basic goodness in ourselves, the ground for creating enlightened world. The Vajrayana view then wakes us up to seeing sacred world in all situations.

This retreat is an opportunity to further enhance our practice and deepen our relationship with the Sakyong and the Shambhala lineage. The program will include talks, meditation practice, discussion groups and yoga.

Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche is the head of the Shambhala lineage. An incarnation of Mipham the Great, he is also the dharma heir and son of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Shambhala Mountain’s founder. He is the spiritual director of Shambhala, a global network of meditation and retreat centers, and the author of the best-selling books Turning the Mind into an Ally and Ruling Your World. Rinpoche’s background embraces both Eastern and Western cultures. Born in Bodhgaya, India, the site of the Buddha’s enlightenment, he grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and received his spiritual training from his father and other distinguished lamas.
