Director of Marketing and Communications

This is a full time position that requires someone with a high capacity for both organizational and creative thinking. As the leader of a small department your work will range from multi-year strategic planning to practical execution of daily marketing tasks.


Our ideal candidate is professional, kind, humble, and energetic. You take a very organized approach to your work, set goals, track progress, make reports, and review strategy. You have clear priorities that you work on every day you’re at work. Your priorities are based on SMC’s goals and careful market analysis. You’re interested in Buddhism, mindfulness, yoga, and other contemplative disciplines. You have a personal meditation practice, read books and blogs, and know of the teachers and organizations operating in this niche. You are team oriented and appreciate creative collaboration. You have experience in digital marketing: operating email marketing software and CRMs, creating content strategies, running Facebook Ads, and working with WordPress. You also have experience running traditional marketing campaigns via print ads, catalogs, flyers, posters, and outreach.


  • Management experience
  • Computer and web savvy (HTML/CSS a plus)
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Experience managing online advertising campaigns
  • Experience with Google Analytics
  • Able to analyze data for trends and opportunities
  • Possess a strong learning mentality
  • Knowledge of direct/inbound marketing helpful
  • Eye for aesthetics and graphic design helpful
  • 3-5 years of experience as a marketing professional preferred
  • Familiarity with Buddhism and Shambhala helpful

How You’ll Work

Our preferred candidate will live and work at SMC. However, we may consider a remote position if you’re fully qualified for the position. You’ll oversee a small team that includes a marketing associate focused on content and email coordination, a part-time web content administrator, and a part-time graphic designer. You’ll also work closely with our program and rental developers, our business development director and occasionally other departments.
